How to know whether the electric scooter / electric bike charger is safe?

December 24

In March 2017, there was an infamous residential fire incident in Pennsylvania, USA. The fire services established the cause as ‘faulty electrical devices’, in other words, the fire was caused by a hoverboard being charged. It’s not the first time that hoverboards and their chargers have been in the press, back in 2016 when hoverboards were the latest craze, the US government took steps to prevent more than 500,000 hoverboards reaching the market due to failing safety tests. More recently in July 2018, a user charging his electric scooter saw it explode.

In recent years, reducing carbon emissions has become an important goal in urban environmental governance in various countries. With the increasing popularity of efficient and portable vehicles, many consumers will purchase their own electric scooters/electric bikes. However, many users will have concerns before purchasing such products and believe that there is a risk of fire and explosion. Then why do electric scooters and electric bicycles explode? How to know that they are safe? XVE, a charger manufacturer who worked for 10 years, gave us a detailed analysis.

Why do electric devices catch fire?

There are generally two components that can cause a fire in an electric device, a battery and a charger.

Batteries that do not meet safety standards

Low-quality batteries are the key reasons for equipments catching fire. The regular batteries will meet the safety standards of different countries. There will be real certification marks on the packaging, and the BMS power management system will be equipped inside to protect batteries from overcharging and excessive discharging smartly. If the battery of the device does not have BMS protection, or the BMS fails, it will not automatically cut off the electric current after the battery is fully charged, resulting in overcharging, and then causing the battery explosion. Therefore, most of the fire and explosion events are caused by overcharging.

Chargers that do not meet safety standards

In many electric bicycle and scooter fire accidents, non-safety chargers are called the first killer of batteries. According to incomplete statistics, from January to July 2018, 4 million electric bicycle chargers were recalled. The recalled chargers involve multiple structural components and materials that do not meet the standards, which pose a great safety hazard to users, and the enterprises also face significant economic losses. Therefore, learning how to distinguish and choose a standard-compliant charger can avoid unnecessary losses for businesses and consumers.

The standard-compliant charger has a clearly visible manufacturer name and certification mark on it and the authentication information can be queried. Like the battery, the internal intelligent management system will automatically detect whether the battery is fully charged. If the battery is fully charged, the input will be automatically cut off. Even if there is no unplug, it will automatically avoid overcharging. Therefore, the standard-compliant charger is safe even if it is charged overnight.

How to tell if the charger is safe?

1. The standard-compliant charger has high requirements in workmanship and materials. Therefore, it can be felt that the material of casing, weight and quality of the outer cable are clearly different.

2. The standard-compliant charger has clearly visible warning information, manufacturer information, certification label, and can be checked the authenticity.

3. Identification of the authenticity of the certification

In North American countries, consumer electronics products are generally required to meet UL standards. Products that pass UL certification generally have a UL label on the enclosure and have a unique identification code. Take this XVE electric vehicle charger as an example, the manufacturer is “JIN XIN YU POWER (SHENZHEN) SUPPLY CO LTD”, and the UL certificate number is “E483915” on the label. Users can log in to the UL official website “iq.ulprospector.com”, enter the certificate number “E483915” and search it.

You will find the company and product model information corresponding to the number and it will prove that the certificate is valid.

Seats, tires or other fittings are different. If the quality of these parts is not good, at most, the service life is short. But you have to charge the electric car with high voltage of up to 100-240V/AC every day, if the battery or charger is not good, it is difficult to predict what will happen. You and your family should deal with the god of death all the time. Why not give yourself and your family a safety guarantee and give yourself a happy home?

Consumers are advised to purchase products through formal ways

In addition, we recommend that users purchase hover boards, electric scooters, electric bicycles and other equipments through regular ways. Before buying, pay attention to whether the vehicle contains safety certifications such as CE, UL, TUV, etc. You can check the authenticity of the authentication and also check if the charger is safe.

XVE is committed to providing safe and intelligent charging solutions for smart electric products, including electronics such as electric vehicles, hoverboards and drones. If your product needs to find a smart charging solution, please feel free to contact us.
