Children are unique and can develop in their own ways. What is child development? It involves the biological, psychological, and emotional changes that occur from birth through adolescence. Here are a few examples of how children develop during the early years of their life.

Language Development

Maybe you’ve experienced your child’s first words or watched a toddler try out new ones. It is exciting to see young children learn how to express what they see in the world around them. Toddlers from about 18-24 months generally have a vocabulary of around 20. By the time their 2 years old, children can start putting together words to make very simple sentences. While deviations from the norm may make parents think of autism, it could also be from excessive exposure to smart phones too soon. One article discusses research from the Hospital for Sick Children in Canada which found that children who used handheld devices more often had a greater chance of delays in speech. While more studies are needed, it is important to know that it’s better to keep young children unplugged so they can learn independently of technology. There are several apps that may claim to help with child development; however, they may be more of a hindrance than help to children.

Social Skills

Babies generally become in tune to their emotions by the end of their first year through determining whose familiar and becoming anxious when separated from familiar faces. As children grow up, they develop emotionally and socially through the formation of friendships. While children have different personalities, and some may not develop friends as easily, this could simply be an indication of shyness or could be something more. If a parent is concerned about their child’s development, they can always consult a child development center to determine if their child has a disability or specific needs that the center can provide. Developing friends can start early and allowing kids time to play together helps them develop some of those social skills. A recent article even discusses why we should let kids play more often and in their own way to learn skills that will be useful throughout their lives.

Movement

While the age that children start walking can vary quite a bit from child to child, it is generally accepted that children start walking between 9 and 12 months. Though perfectly normal children can take up to 16 months to start walking. Babies may learn to crawl and walk on their own without encouragement, however this could lead to delayed progression. For example, the wide variety of baby swings and activity centers along with long hours in a car seat may hinder the encouragement of babies to start crawling. Encouragement by parents and other care-takers such as utilizing tummy time can help the process along. Forbes explains that parents should allow their children to experience risk and failure to help them become successful. Learning to walk represents one of the first opportunities in which parents need to allow their children to fail and learn from their mistakes.
